Everyone is invited to attend the next Palmetto Paddlers meeting on May 27th in the Luther Lee Building at 7:00 p.m.
We'll have exciting trip reports on the recent Goodale State Park, Sunday on the Saluda, Sparkleberry Swamp and Landsford Canal trips. Dennis Catoe and Kate Whitaker will talk about the upcoming Rice Fields, Sunday on the Saluda, Broad River, and Black River trips.
Description:
Meeting at 8:45 in Columbia or 10:30 in Moncks Corner (see below)
This is a beautiful trip into the heart of the old Lowcountry rice fields below Lake Moultrie, just off of the Tail Race Canal connecting the Santee Lakes to the Cooper River. There is no shuttle to run so the trip length is variable; count on about 4 -5 hours on the water. Trip is suitable for all boats and skill levels. There is some tidal influence but usually, not much current to contend with. We will be exploring the old canals dug to flood the rice fields. We sometimes cross the Tail Race to the Old Santee Canal Park to check out their interpretive center, bathrooms and green lawn on which to enjoy lunch. There are usually lots of birds; nesting osprey, heron and egrets and redwing blackbirds to watch. We sometimes catch sight of some shy alligators, when we're lucky! Bring lunch, sun hat, sun screen, lunch and plenty of hydrating drinks. You'll find binoculars, walkie-talkies and cameras useful.
Description:
Meet at 1 pm in zoo parking lot for a trip from the zoo down to Gervais Street bridge. About 2.5 or 3 hours with shuttle. This is a mild whitewater trip for paddlers who may desire to try some whitewater. All skill levels and boats, except for fiberglass and sea kayaks. Bring helmet and PFD. We may have one or two spare helmets but check with me.
Description:
Paddle away all of your troubles with a leisurely hour and half paddle on the Broad River Wednesday June 4th. We will paddle from the River Front Park at the top of the Columbia Canal to the Amphitheater take out on the Congaree River in downtown West Columbia. Although this is a short 3-mile paddle we should see several spots with the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies and may even see a beaver or two.
Description:
This trip is from Hwy 121 near Carlisle, SC to Hwy 34 near Blair, SC and covers 15.8 river miles. This section of the Broad River runs through Sumter National Forest with little to no development on its banks and is quite scenic. The river has some mild Class I rapids and rocks so some maneuvering is required and fiberglass boats therefore are NOT recommended.

Update: It's with a heavy paddle that I must suggest the canceling of my upcoming trip for Palmetto Paddlers on Black River in Williamsburg County. Our current water level of 1.51 and a flow of 21 CFS would mean more walking than paddling...and the forecast for any rain the rest of this week is dim/weak/poor/slim/not likely/droughtful.
Description:
This trip will start at 10:00 at Lawton Park on Prestwood Drive in Hartsville, SC. We will paddle about 15 minutes up the lake to a cypress swamp which will lead us to a clear, deep creek. The creek is very shady with lots of twists and turns. There is a good place to take out for lunch. There is plenty of water, no downed trees (as of last week), and no poison ivy hanging over the water.
