Description:
Meeting at 8:45 in Columbia or 10:30 in Moncks Corner (see below)
This is a beautiful trip into the heart of the old Lowcountry rice fields below Lake Moultrie, just off of the Tail Race Canal connecting the Santee Lakes to the Cooper River. There is no shuttle to run so the trip length is variable; count on about 4 -5 hours on the water. Trip is suitable for all boats and skill levels. There is some tidal influence but usually, not much current to contend with. We will be exploring the old canals dug to flood the rice fields. We sometimes cross the Tail Race to the Old Santee Canal Park to check out their interpretive center, bathrooms and green lawn on which to enjoy lunch. There are usually lots of birds; nesting osprey, heron and egrets and redwing blackbirds to watch. We sometimes catch sight of some shy alligators, when we're lucky! Bring lunch, sun hat, sun screen, lunch and plenty of hydrating drinks. You'll find binoculars, walkie-talkies and cameras useful.
