*** HELP SAVE OUR RIVERS (comments due by October 12th, 2015) ***
Notice of Intent to Deny Permit
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) September 4th, 2015 issued a Notice of Intent to Deny renewal of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for the Carolina Water Service, Inc., I-20 Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lexington County.
"DHEC has been a longstanding proponent of regionalizing wastewater treatment in Lexington County and eliminating the Carolina Water Service I-20 plant's discharges into the Saluda River," said DHEC Director Catherine Heigel. "We support the efforts of the legislature, the Town of Lexington, the Central Midlands Council of Governments, the Riverkeeper and others to make the elimination of this discharge into the scenic Lower Saluda River a reality and to ensure the needs of the 2,100 customers are addressed."
In accordance with South Carolina regulations, the agency will take public comment on the proposal to deny the renewal of the permit prior to making a final decision. The deadline to submit written comments is Monday, October 12, 2015.
For more information about the proposed intent to deny and how to submit comments, click here.
There is one step left: Email DHEC and support their denial of the Carolina Water Service permit by October 12th.
This Saturday the 10th, kayak support is needed for this triathlon. The stipend for volunteer time will be donated to the Red Cross.
While we heal from the heart-break of the last few days, and we continue to pray and help our loved ones affected by the floods, I am grateful for a community that is resilient and who knows how to stand up to the plate to help others. In that same spirit of helping, we are still looking for our core of volunteers to help us make the 2015 Dam Tri possible, this Saturday October 10th at the Lexington side of the SCE&G Dam Park. We will meet at 7am next to the transition area. All work will be completed by 11:30 am.
This is part of the healing process, to get back to the things that make us happy and keep us healthy. We owe it to those already signed-up who still need their points – this is the last race of the year. I think we must show others that getting back to normal is part of the healing process, and we must lead our community in doing this while also using our time to help the Red Cross efforts.
All volunteer work will be donated directly to the Red Cross. We offer $15/kayaker or paddler, and $10/volunteer for all other positions. We have volunteer shirts that we can also donate to the Red Cross, and Salsarita’s post-race meal.
At this time we have about 7 volunteers. This event requires a minimum of 24 volunteers to keep people safe.
Please contact me directly if you can help.
Thank you and blessings,
