Roll Practice YMCA Pool, Irmo, SC
Limited to 15 boaters each session; reservations required.
Pool fee: $7 for Palmetto Paddlers members or $13 for non-members
You can join Palmetto Paddlers for annual dues of $20 ($25 family).
Required equipment: kayak or canoe, spray skirt, paddle, and correct change, please. A towel and dry clothes for afterwards are suggested. Showers and lockers are available. Bring your own padlock.
We will meet at the Irmo YMCA at 1501 Kennerly Road at 7:15 PM. See map link below. Look for a fleet of brightly-colored plastic boats at the far left (south) end of the YMCA building, near the pool exit door.
VERY IMPORTANT: All boats must be completely clean inside and out—we will inspect and provide additional cleaning of all boats before they are brought into the pool area. Remove all float bags and equipment from your boat (throw bags, first aid kits, old sandwiches, etc.)
Instruction may be available if willing instructors show up (they usually do). The primary purpose of these sessions is practice.
FROM OUR UPSTATE NEIGHBORS, FOOTHILLS PADDLING CLUB:
There have been issues with tile cracked and broken along the edge of the deep pool at Westside from kayaks. Effective tonight, we are requiring people to stay a foot away from the edge of the competition pool at all times except to get into the pool on the mat. Please practice hip snaps with the help of another boat. Upon exiting the pool please hop out of your kayak away from the wall, push the boat onto the mat, and swim the the ladder. While in the pool, please watch your stern when turning to make sure it's not hitting the wall. If anyone is seen deliberately running his/her boats into the side, they will be told to leave pool immediately. Westside has been a good venue for rolling sessions and is willing to work with us to resolve the problem. I feel this is a fair compromise to still have access to pool and a lot better than the proposed alternative. I'm not saying that everyone is responsible, but just be careful and mindful of your location in the pool. Thanks.
I think we can avoid formal rules at the Irmo YMCA pool if we simply remain aware of the possibility of tile damage from kayak collision and act with common sense.
