Paddle from Santee State Park around Persanti Island and beyond on Lake Marion
Trip Coordinator-Mike Hollis
Meet at the boat ramp in Santee State Park for a pre-trip safety meeting at 10am. There is a small fee for using the state park and is payable at the office next to the boat ramp. The trip length will be from 8 to 10 miles depending on how much exploring we elect to do. Plan on being on the water for at least 4 to 5 hours. The trip includes a two mile open water crossing going on and on the return trip, kayaks of 12 feet or longer are strongly recommended in order to keep the trip moving along.
As with all of our trips you'll be required we wear a properly fitting pfd with a whistle attached. Spray skirts are optional but will come in handy if the waves pickup on the open water crossings. Bring a snack and water for a rest stop on the southern end of Persanti Island about midway on the trip. Also bring sun protection as there is very little shade if any during the trip. Persanti Island is completely undeveloped and is home to plenty of bird life, wild hogs and of course alligators. This part of Lake Marion is also home to a large population of Ospreys and many of the nest are fairly close to the water. It's a great place to take plenty of pictures while enjoying time on the water.
Email the trip coordinator if you plan on joining us for this trip or have any questions. SYOTW.
