Palmetto Paddlers has arranged to have ACA whitewater kayaking Instructor Trainer Educator Larry Ausley conduct a River Trip Leaders Training Clinic on the Saluda River in Columbia. Besides being an ITE in whitewater kayaking, Larry is an Instructor Trainer in Coastal Kayaking and advanced whitewater kayaking, river safety and rescue and tandem canoe instructor. Larry is the past Chair and a current member of ACA’s River Kayaking Committee. Larry has taught and certified several of Columbia’s current whitewater kayaking instructors among the 100 Instructors and Instructor Trainers he’s worked with in the past decade.
If you have led, or think you might in the future be leading (“coordinating”) a club trip, whether flatwater or whitewater, this clinic is for you. Although intended primarily for trip leaders in Palmetto Paddlers, we may open up registration to Foothills Paddling Club as well, if space is available.
This course will be designed to allow participants to improve their knowledge and abilities in trip planning, equipment and supplies planning, group management on the river, incident prevention and reaction, deep-water rescues, and river rescues, including shore and boat-based rescues.
The clinic will consist of 4 hours of classroom training and 8 hours of river time.
If there are more than 5 students, an assistant instructor will be available, as required by ACA. We will limit enrollment to 10 students.
Schedule and Locations:
The classroom portion of the clinic will begin on Friday 10/28/2016 at 5:30 PM and will run until 10:00 PM, with a dinner included at 7:00 PM. The location will be 15 Cedarwood Lane, Columbia, SC 29205.
The river portion will take place on Saturday 10/29/2016 and will run from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM. The location is the Zoo to Gervais section of the Lower Saluda River, starting just below Mill Race at the Columbia Riverbanks Zoo. If water levels in the Saluda are too high or too low, the Broad River may be used instead.
Equipment for river session:
Whitewater kayak or canoe. Helmet, sprayskirt (for kayaks), PFD, paddle, river shoes, throw rope ( a limited number of loaner throw ropes will be available to borrow) and protective clothing appropriate for the weather and water conditions. You will spend some time in the water in the afternoon so be prepared for immersion. Bring your own lunch/snack, water.
Participants should be comfortable paddling the Zoo-to-Gervais section of the Saluda, which is Class II-III. We will not be paddling through Mill Race Rapid.
Tuition is $20 for current members of Palmetto Paddlers, or $30 for non-members. This is a major bargain for training of this quality. To register, contact Les Case by email.
