This section of the French Broad is suitable for intermediate whitewater boaters who have paddling experience in Class III rapids. You should be able to catch eddies, peel out and ferry in moderately fast-moving water. FB9 is considered a step up in difficulty from the Nantahala, but less difficult than the Pigeon.  If the water level is high enough so that we can paddle all the way to Hot Springs, there will be one Class IV rapid, but it can easily be avoided.

Required equipment: PFD, helmet and whistle. Whitewater kayaks need spray skirts. Recreational boats are not permitted. A towel and dry clothes for afterwards are recommended. Bring drinking water and sunscreen.

Weather dependent gear: At this time of year, cool temperatures might dictate a drysuit or a drytop.  If in doubt, ask.

We will meet in Columbia at 8:00 AM at the DMV (I-26 at Peak exit). After re-loading boats and gear for carpooling, signing the waiver and swapping cell phone numbers, we will depart, possibly by 8:15 AM. We will stop for gas near the SC/NC border. If you prefer to meet us at the river, be at the put-in (Barnard) no later than 11:15 AM. There are porta-johns and dressing rooms at the put-in.

After shuttling, we should be on the river by 11:45 and off by about 4 PM.

Please do not just show up on the day of the trip; you must first sign up or contact the trip coordinator. Space will be limited, depending on your abilities and how many safety boaters sign up.
