Meet at the unimproved boat landing on the east side of Highway 601 at 10:00 AM. The landing is about 2.3 miles above the Bates Bridge and the Congaree River.

The plan is to paddle Bates Old River out to the Congaree River, stop for a lunch break on a large sand bar and then return to the landing. Part of the trip is along the boundary of the Congaree National Park. Bates Old River is a large oxbow lake that was once a part of the Congaree river. It is home to a number of bird species, turtles and other wild life. The total trip length should be around 6 miles and paddling time will be about 3 hours.

Great trip for paddlers of all experience levels and all types of paddle craft. You need to wear a pfd with a whistle attached. Bring water and a snack for a lunch time break.
