The Nolichucky is in a beautiful, deep, remote mountain gorge that offers lots of great play, especially within the first few miles. The Noli's punch is at the beginning, then it mellows out to a mostly class III run allowing ample opportunity to enjoy the scenery. The gorge is remote with the only opportunity to walk out by a railroad track that parallels the river. This is a Class III river with a few Class III+ features thrown in. The rapid called Quarter Mile is graded Class IV, but that is primarily because of its length.Individual rapids in Quarter Mile are generally considered Class III
First-timers are welcome, but participants should have a combat roll and be comfortable catching and leaving eddies in fast current. We can scout the larger drops, but some of the rapids are read and run.
We will meet at 8:00 AM at the DMV. We will not stop for breakfast on the drive up. DMV address is 1016 State Rd S-40-2805, Irmo, SC 29063. Map link: https://goo.gl/maps/edgKwehcHeJ2
Required equipment: PFD, helmet and whistle. Whitewater kayaks need spray skirts. Recreational boats are not permitted. A towel and dry clothes for afterwards are recommended. Bring drinking water and sunscreen.
Weather dependent gear: At this time of year, cool air temperatures may dictate a drysuit or a drytop and appropriate underlayers.
After shuttling, we should be on the river by noon and off by about 4 PM.
Please do not just show up on the day of the trip; you must first contact the trip coordinator. Space will be limited, depending on your abilities and how many safety boaters sign up. Please inform the Coordinator in a timely manner if your plans change and you can no longer attend.
