Details: US National Whitewater Center, Charlotte, NC.  This is man-made whitewater.  One channel is Class III and the other is Class IV.  Although free of many of the hidden hazards you might encounter in a natural river, these rapids are still quite powerful and are best for intermediate paddlers who have a decent combat roll.

What to bring: kayak, helmet, PFD, whistle, flotation airbags for boats, water (no glass bottles, no alcohol), river shoes (no flip/flops).  Optional: paddling gloves to protect knuckles from concrete, eyewear retainers, waterproof camera, towel and shampoo for the hot shower.  No paddle leashes.  Recreational kayaks are not allowed on this trip.

Do not bring lunch or drinks, alcoholic or otherwise, to the USNWC  Water is ok.  There are restaurants onsite, as well as bathrooms, hot showers, plenty of parking ($5 per vehicle).  There is also a fee of $25 for water access, which entitles you to paddle all day long.  Kayaks can usually be rented for $25.  This is an excellent way to test-paddle a boat before you buy it.

We will meet just north of Columbia at 9:00 AM at the Walmart off of Killian Rd.  The address is 321 Killian Rd, Columbia, SC 29203.  Here is a link to the google map,,-80.967919,17.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x88f8a8609de61a37:0x6b30f8ff56e1bdc!8m2!3d34.1380584!4d-80.9663359.  The plan is to meet at 9:00 AM to set carpool and sign waivers, and to be on the road by 9:30am.  You can meet us at the WWC at 11:00am if you'd prefer, but you will still need to complete an ACA waiver and pay the $5.00 ACA insurance coverage if you're not already an ACA member.  if you're going to go as part of the Palmetto Paddler group.  It's possible to get quite tired quickly at the WWC due to the ability to continually be running whitewater, so if you're wanting to leave early or stay longer, you may want to discuss this before hand or drive your own vehicle.

Do not show up on the day of the trip without first communicating with the trip coordinator.  The number of beginners allowed on this trip will depend on the number of experienced boaters who sign up.

Plan to attend?  Contact the Coordinator.  Please inform the Coordinator in a timely manner if your plans change and you can no longer attend.
