French Broad Section 9
Coordinator: Les Case, Palmetto Paddlers
This section of the French Broad is suitable for intermediate whitewater boaters who have some paddling experience in Class III rapids. You should be able to catch eddies, peel out and ferry in moderately fast-moving water. FB9 is generally considered a step up in difficulty from the Nantahala, but less difficult than the Pigeon.
If the water level is low (800-1500 cfs), we will take out at Stackhouse to avoid the scrapy sections below. If the level is high enough (above 1500-cfs) so that we can comfortably paddle all the way to Hot Springs, there will be one Class IV rapid (Frank Bell's Rapid), but it can easily be avoided.
Required equipment: PFD, helmet and whistle. Whitewater kayaks need spray skirts. Recreational boats are not permitted. A towel and dry clothes for afterwards are recommended. Bring lots of drinking water and sunscreen.
We will meet in Columbia at 7:30 AM at Home Depot, Harbison exit I-26. After re-loading boats and gear for carpooling, signing the waiver and swapping cell phone numbers, we will depart at about 7:45 AM. We will stop for gas and a fast food breakfast near the SC/NC border. If you prefer to meet us at the river, be at the put-in (Barnard) no later than 10:45 AM. There are porta-johns and dressing rooms at the put-in.
After shuttling, we should be on the river by 11:15 and off by about 3 PM. If we stop at Stackhouse due to low water and the group agrees, a second lap is possible.
Please do not just show up on the day of the trip; you must first sign up or contact the trip coordinator. Space will be limited, depending on your abilities and how many safety boaters sign up.
Plan to attend? Contact the Trip Coordinator. Please inform the Coordinator in a timely manner if your plans change and you can no longer attend.
