Sunday on the Saluda - March 5, 2006

By Dave Mullis

The first SOTS for 2006 was a great success. It was attended by sixteen people with fourteen boats. The river was low and slow at around 600 cfs which was good practice for negotiation around rocks. No one swam. The weather could not have been better and the Eagles are nesting again this year.

Our trip today was comprised of a wide variety of personalities and craft. Al Burner successfully navigated the rocks in his WW kayak as did Sheila Snow in her Rec boat and Charlene and Darrell plowed through this low water in their new Shredder. The Shredder is an inflatable pontoon sort of boat which is really cool and which should be able to handle almost any class of water. Kids and adults came along for today's paddle and all performed admirably. In attendance were (please excuse spelling) Moffet, Louisa, Sean, Carrie, Aaron, Al, Jon, Charlene, Darrel, Sheila, Dennis, Nicole, Jim, Matt, Dave and Dianne.

Sadly, the land on river right of Shandon Rapid has been raped by the money hungry developers and I dread to see what monstrosities will be built on the dinky 1/8th of an acre lots. This development also threatens access to portage around Shandon Rapid which can be life threatening to unskilled or uninformed paddlers during high water. The club needs to take a stand and try to stop the fences before they go up. Portage on river left is not an option.

Dennis, Dianne and I will continue to lead these monthly trips until the weather turns too cold and everyone is welcome to join in. Check the specifics on the club calendar as far as gear and requirements to participate and don't hesitate to email or call me if you have any questions.
