Sunday on the Saluda for August was another success for introducing paddlers to whitewater.
As you know we have had whitewater trips on the Saluda the first Sunday of May, June, July and August. These trips are especially arranged for novice paddlers or flatwater paddlers wishing to try whitewater.
For the August trip, present were new paddlers, Claire White, Al Burner and Ed Brown, as well as old pros Dave and Dianne Mullis, Kyle Altman, Jon Harrison and your's truly Dennis Catoe. Al has been down almost every Sunday this summer at the Sunday on the Saluda trips so I don't know if he qualifies as a beginner anymore. He's getting quite good at this.
The weather was cloudy and there was a wonderful cool breeze on the whole trip. The water was running 1400 cfs which was great for beginners. It was exciting but safe. I wish you could have seen Claire's big smile as she came through Shandon rapid for the first time and aced it. She was screaming like she'd won the lottery. No spills on whole trip. I think Claire, Al and Ed have whitewater flowing in their blood now. You can tell by that crazy look in their eyes that all whitewater paddlers have.
We hope to do Sunday on the Saluda trips next summer. Thanks to all those that participated, the new paddlers and the old pros who helped with safety.
P.S. Dave and Diane may have a Saluda trip the first Sunday in September but all interested must notify them prior to the trip.
