south fork of Edisto, Aiken state park

Hello all!
I have just signed up on the site and love it! It is such a great source of info! My question is about the South fork of the edisto. Is is passable south of Highway 53 (Aiken State Park)? Has anyone been down recently? Last year my wife and I went from highway 39 on the North Fork to Highway 17 with no real issues. Only had to cut a couple of limbs out of the way. I am guessing the two forks are similar. How about campsites along the south fork?
I heard a of a man who recently had to sleep in his canoe! Thinking about going in March and just looking for any info! Thanks and good luck!

South Fork of Edisto

It has been a while but Bobo Kirkland and I have paddled the South Fork in stages all the way from above I-20 to well below Hwy 17 almost to the Inlet.

I suspect you can find places to camp. Be armed, people then seem to be more polite.

If I recall correctly, Mung Dung is about a days paddle below I-20.

An interesting thing on the South Fork is all the artesian wells. There is at least one of these with an attached Baptismal Basin.

I don't recommend it but I have put in on the North Fork at I-20 and paddled in stages to the confluence.

In Blackville is a Mennionite Resturant "Miller's Bread Basket" - worth a stop - if you are concerned about a place to camp - check with old man Miller. He once wanted to run canoe trips with catered camping - so I think he either has or has access to property on the river.

I think the coldest I have ever been was a 4th of July weekend camping trip on the Edisto River - so be prepared.

One March Bobo and I once pulled a fellow of African ethnicity from the Edisto river - and he had turned the most striking shade of blue I have ever seen a human become. Didn't even know they could do that.

Check with Monty with Western Carolina Paddlers as he just recently paddled the South Fork and plans to lead a club trip this Spring. We've done it but there have been ice storms and hurricanes since then. Be wary of Creed :-)WCP@main.nc.us
