Cayce to Charleston

3 or 4 of us are contemplating a kayak trip from Cayce to Charleston. We are looking for advice and information. Our main concern is the lake paddle. Can the entire trip be completed in 4 and 1/2 days?

I found one internet report of a trip from Rock Hill to Charleston - but the lake paddle part went something like " then I paddled through the lakes". It sounded easy, but I have a different impression of how it might go.

Your web site is great with a lot of useful information.I am hoping some of your group has made this trip and can help us at least make a decision on the feasability. I have made the trip from Cayce to the 601 in a canoe, and know about the lakes from a motor boat view point. Below the locks would be new area.

thanks

The locks can be problematic. Sometimes they'll let kayakers through, other times they balk. You might want to message Ralph Earhart(kayakcharleston@comcast.net) for the POC at the locks. He's gotten groups of us through there in the past. Another fellow paddler advises that - According to Santee-Cooper http://www.nc-sc.com/santee1.htm#recreation it is 162 miles from the confluence of the Wateree and Congaree rivers to Charleston Harbor. A pretty fair trip for 4 1/2 days.

Thanks Andy. I was not aware that the locks would be a problem other than perhaps a delay. Will try to make that contact that you gave.

The time may turn out to be our biggest problem. Google earth approximated the total distance to be about 160. With good water flow we may be alright to Low Falls or the State Park. After that it would probably be a push throught the lakes. Have you made that paddle. or have you been as far as Charleston after the locks. I know the tide schedule will effect that as well.
At this point we have too many questions that we will need answers to before heading out

Thanks for your help.

Cayce to Charleston

My knowledge is limited to paddling through the locks during a Low County Paddlers club trip - I hold duel citizenship in both Palmetto and LCP. FYI, Ralph wrote the book 'Kayak Charleston'...trips within 1 hour of Charleston, so he may be helpful in answering some of your (Charleston area) questions.
Good luck,
Andy

Don't know when you are going but if you are looking for others to go as well, i would be interested.

If it's not open to a broader group, I'd like to hear later what you learned in case others among us wish to try it later. Thanks, and have fun.

Lori,
We have backed off our trip for now. We have done some planning and trying to calculate the length of the trip. Because we are limited on our time to the 4 and 1/2 days we have just decided to wait. We might could make it, but are afraid it would turn into more like work if we got behind. July is probably not the best time anyway. We still hope to try it the fall. I will post something if and when we decide.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully you can reschedule the trip, sounds like it would be fun.
