4 day edisto trip

Hey Y'all
I just joined the forum. I'm planning a 4 day trip next summer for our older boy scouts. One of the guys grandparents lives on the South Fork up near 321 so we'll probably start there. Any advice for campsites and takeout?

Thanks

Edisto

Great river for extended trips but I would avoid the summer if at all possible. Bugs and heat can make for a miserable trip. Campsites may be plentiful or hard to come by depending on water levels.

Edisto

Hey there

Yea, I know it'll be hot. Don't know if we can do it any other time of the year though. We'll talk it over some and see what everybody thinks.

Edisto trip

My son and I paddle the Edisto a good bit. Mostly around Springfield. We did a two day trip last summer in July. The water was low but, not so bad you had to walk. We put in at US 21 (Whetstone Crossroads) and paddled to Colleton Sate Park the first day. This is a 22 mile paddle. This took about 7 hours of paddling with a lot of stop and play. We camped at Collenton State Park.

The next day we paddled to Givhans Ferry state park. This is another 22 miles or so. This trip took about 6 hours of aggressive paddling with less play time. The water slows A LOT a mile or two from the park. Not sure how experienced your paddlers are but, this part of the trip was the most difficult for me. Both camp grounds I mentioned are nice places. Should do large groups well. If the water is low, there are plenty of sand bars along the way. The boys might get lucky and find some nice sharks teeth (hand size)cruising the shallow bottoms. Good Luck. My son wants to paddle from the Springfield Bridge to the coast this summer for his senior trip. I would rather have him on the Edisto than Mexico......

Thanks for the info

Hey Swamp Gator

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to take so long in getting back on the forum. Been busy with a christmas trip down the suwannee. Plus I started a masters degree program in january, so not a lot of extra time for web surfing.

I'm starting to plan this trip now. What is the river like from Hwy 321 down to 21?

That summer trip for your son sounds great. My oldest son worked at Philmont Scout Ranch in new Mexico after his graduation. It's a good thing for them have a wholesome adventure at that age. Wish I could go back and change a few things.

Hey, I have not paddled 321

Hey,

I have not paddled 321 to 21 yet. Our trip started at highway 21 over the summer. A good reference book to purchase is "Paddling South Carolina" by Gene Able and Jack Horan. I have used it for Turkey Creek, Savannah River, and the Edisto. According to the book the river begins to widen and get deeper at that location. It would have to be an easier paddle than the Springfield bridge area.

Campsites

Hey Y'all

Any campsites big enough for 12 folks near Cane Island (RM 72) and Good Hope Landing (RM 53.5)?

Thanks
