This is a beautiful trip in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. We are hoping that this will be a good time to catch (sight of) lots of migrating birds as well as seeing the local birds and reptiles! The trip is about 8-9 miles; starting on the Creek and riding with the tide, out to the river. This is a good trip for most boats though canoes might have a challenge if it is windy — and it is usually windy this near the coast. But the wind should be the only challenge for paddlers; so this is a good one for beginners. We will be going from Cuckolds Creek Landing to the Steel Landing on the Combahee on highway 17.

We will be meeting at the take-out, Steel Bridge Landing on the Beaufort side of Highway 17, where it crosses the Combahee River, at 10:00. Expect about a 2 to 2½ hours drive from Columbia. We can meet in Columbia at 7:30 and caravan if anyone would like. Be sure to let me know where you plan to meet us when you send your email. I will send directions for those that want them though there are a number of ways to get to this spot from Columbia. Please note this landing is NOT on 17 Alternate. We will be leaving a shuttle car or two at the take-out after shifting some boats, and caravanning up to the put-in. The trip should be leisurely and take 6-7 hours with a stop for lunch and time to explore the waterways. Bring lunch, plenty of water, sun and rain protection; binoculars may be useful. We will be using GPS to guide us so please bring yours loaded with a local map of the area. Walkie-talkies may prove helpful too.

As always, please email me at kwhitaker@agfirst.com if you will be joining us or if you have any questions. Or call me. Please include your phone number in your email.

Happy Trails, Kate
