Rescue/Self Rescue Practice for Flatwater Paddlers

Ed Wrightson, Kate Whitaker, Bruce Monson (our Safety Officer), Linda Gray, Mike Hollis, Steve Kelsey, Sean Kelsey and etc.

We will be having the Spring Fling again this year. This is an opportunity to test your paddling equipment and practice and learn rescue/self rescue skills in a safe, fun environment with other members. The practice is for flat water boats: sea kayaks, recreational boats and canoes. It is not a roll clinic or a first aid class. All members are welcome and it is a great opportunity for new paddlers to learn some rescue skills and become more comfortable on (and in) the water and for long time paddlers to recheck equipment and accomplish their yearly rescue practice. This event is by members, for members and everyone gets to participate. Wear your water clothes, bring sun protection and your boats. We'll have a pot luck picnic and probably end up with a lake paddle, for those that still have some energy after the main event!
Plan to come join us.

Directions to Recreation Lake, Lake Monticello

From Interstate 20, take the Highway 215 exit away from Columbia, towards Monticello.

Go approximately 28 miles on Hwy 215, past Jenkinsville and the VC Summer Nuclear Plant and through the town of Monticello.

Turn left at the second turn past the big blue (maybe yellow, now) building in Monticello onto Meadow Lake Road. This turn is marked with brown signs pointing to the Lake Monticello landings.

Travel 1.9 miles from the turn. Cross the dam and pass the Monticello Park Ramps sign (Do Not turn left here!) Turn right at the Rec Lake Park Ramp brown sign onto Hemlock Road into the Park. Take the right fork to the landing.

Bring your boat(s) and gear (marked with your name) and drinks and food to share for a potluck picnic. And plan to join in, get wet and have a great time!
