Palmetto Paddlers Meeting - Group Paddle
Next meeting for Palmetto Paddlers on Tuesday July 29 shall not be at the Luther Lee Building as a group club paddle is scheduled. Instead everyone will meet at 6:30 (new time) at the Riverbanks Zoo (off Graystone Blvd) parking lot far right side. The group will be split for 2 trips.
1) Whitewater trip on Saluda will paddle from there to Gervais street bridge. This is mild whitewater with one class II rapid at low water. This is fine for beginner paddlers but helmets are required for safety. All boats except fiberglass are acceptable. This trip will be headed by Rock Garrick.
2) Flat water trip on Broad River/Congaree from diversion dam to Gervais Street bridge. We will leave zoo on Greystone, right at Broad River Road across bridge and first left, down gravel road to parking area. Bring kayak wheels if you have them as it is about 100 yards to water below dam. This is fine for all paddlers. Again fiberglass not recommended due to rocks. Dennis Catoe will lead this trip.
Both trips will take out at park next to New Orleans Restaurant and Gervais Street bridge. Both trips should last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours including shuttle, so we should be before dark. This said it is advisable that you bring a light or have one on your pfd and a whistle. If there is time and interest, we may all meet (about 8:45) and go out to eat after the paddle.
